Over the past couple of years, the UK has become determined in being more eco friendly. There are a few steps we are starting to make to get our every day lives a little greener and help the environment out just that little bit more.

How are we becoming more eco friendly?

You may have noticed in recent months there has been a big push for more renewable packaging on food and other household items, every year we throw away thousands of plastic containers which cannot be recycled.

Festivals

As the summer festival season is about to go into full swing, there have been a few big changes to the way things are happening. Don’t panic; you will still have an amazing time! Those who run these festivals are now working towards making their music festivities are as eco-friendly as possible. A good example of this is thinking about how much water is consumed over the course of a 4-day festival; you have thousands of people drinking then throwing away hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles.

Single-use plastic is now something many festivals are pushing behind them. In 2018, Bestival decided rather than giving away plastic water bottles to their consumers they will put water into aluminium cans which are fully recyclable. The festival is linked to CanoWater, some of the cans of which you can purchase also have a resealable lid, which is even better for the environment as it can be reusable. Another thing many people don’t realise is that when a plastic water bottle is left in the sun for hours, the heat can cause harmful toxins from the plastic to enter the water, of which you then consume. An aluminium can do not have the same issue, but it can also help your water stay cooler for longer.

Wet Wipes

The government has recently stated they have plans to ban wet wipes. Many of you may be annoyed about this due to the sheer convenience of the manufactured washcloth. A lot of people are unaware that a wet wipe is in fact only a single use item, think about it, you only use it once. It is then either thrown away, or you try to flush it down the toilet. Wipes contain a range of non-biodegradable components. These components can take years to break down.

So many people flush these single-use items which clog the pipes under our homes. Fatbergs then form, this is normally made from a range of materials which cannot make it through the pipework. A shocking 93% of this material is wet wipes.

What can I use as an alternative?

You don’t need to worry there are so many alternatives to wet wipes. Flannels may seem a bit old school, but they are a great way of removing makeup and washing down little ones, simply soak in warm water, or you can make your own homemade solution found similar to those in baby wipes. A lot of people like using baby wipes or makeup wipes due to the way they leave your skin feeling. All you need to do is mix baby oil and chamomile tea, and your skin will be fresh.

There is already a range of eco-friendly brands out there however at this moment in time can be hard to come by. We recommend giving Mum and You baby wipes a go as they are 100% biodegradable. If you are looking for an alternative to remove your make up you should also take a look at the Makeup Eraser it works to remove even the most stubborn and toughest to remove makeup.

Hair Dye

Henna hair dye has been around for years and is one of the best natural based products to dye your hair with. Many women across the UK are now making the switch from hair dye which holds nasty chemicals to more natural based products.

While chemical-based products help you achieve a great colour and even dramatic colour changes it can do a lot of damage to your body as well as the environment. Dyes can often cause your scalp to become more itchy or sensitive compared to what it was before. Not to mention the damage it does to your hair, it puts extra stress on each lock and causes early hair loss or even bald patches in more extreme cases.

Henna hair dye is a great eco-friendly and allergy-free alternative. It worked just as well as normal conventional hair dyes. However, will allow your hair to be healthier, once you have used a henna based hair product you will notice a significant amount of shine, it will also be in great condition with less irritation to your scalp.

Gardening

One of this year’s biggest eco-friendly trends is in the garden. Consumers are now rejecting the use of chemical compounds found in most growing agents used to help plants. Rather then the usual fertilisers and chemical consumers are now looking for more organic choices.

It is not all about making the garden the feature of your home; gardeners are now taking into consideration the animals they have around them. Making their gardens more of a natural habitat for these animals, it also helps with keeping your garden sustainable.

How do I become more eco-friendly?

There are so many different ways you can become more eco-friendly, but we always think it’s about starting at home. Once you have got being eco-friendly down to a tea at home, you can start to look at other aspects of your life where you need to think about what you’re using and how you use it. We always recommend starting with your electricity supply for your home can you turn lights off around the house that are not in use, do you need to really dry your clothes in the tumble dryer? If it is a nice day why not let the sun and fresh air dry them.
